Online shopping in Canada: compare the final cost

The price on a product page does not always tell you which offer costs less. Compare the same item, quantity and delivery address.

Build your comparison from:

The product price after any discount that actually applies; shipping to your address using your chosen delivery method; taxes and other fees shown before payment; the billing currency and any currency-conversion fees; possible import charges if the item ships from abroad.

For an international order, check who pays import charges and whether they are included at checkout. If this is unclear, record “cost unconfirmed” rather than zero.

Compare the cost of returning it, too.

Who pays return shipping? Must the item remain sealed? Are any products excluded? A cheaper offer may be less attractive if returning the item is difficult or expensive.

Check what is included.

An accessory, size, new or refurbished condition, or a different seller may explain the price difference.

Finally, save the item reference, seller’s name, date and final price breakdown. If some charges remain unknown, your comparison is incomplete. Avoid adding an unwanted item simply to reach a free-shipping threshold.

Build a two-offer comparison sheet

Create two columns on paper, offer A and offer B. For each, copy the exact reference, condition, included accessories and currency. Add a line for each stated charge and another for anything still unconfirmed. Compare totals only when the underlying items are equivalent. Keep the date you checked: a recorded amount is an observation at that time, not a promise about a later price.

An item shipped from nearby and the same item shipped from abroad cannot be compared by displayed price alone. Likewise, a bundle containing a useful accessory may need a different comparison from an item sold on its own. If you do not need the accessory, do not automatically assign it value in your decision.
